EDITORIAL COVER ILLUSTRATION

HOUSE PLANTS MAGAZINE is a monthly publication aimed at the gardening curious - urban dwellers, apartment plant lovers, and design-conscious green thumbs.

This month’s issue centres on the theme Big Gardens for Small Spaces, exploring how creativity and design can turn even the tiniest environments into lush, vibrant escapes.

GOAL:  Design a compelling cover illustration that sparks curiosity, communicates the issue’s core concept, and connects with an audience interested in imaginative gardening.

To support the theme, I developed a playful illustration featuring a whimsical treehouse nestled in a pilea plant. This visual metaphor reflects the idea of making the most out of limited environments—turning small spaces into big experiences.

A bold colour palette and thoughtful use of negative space were used to draw attention and lead the viewer’s eye from the magazine title to the core messaging.

The result is a visually striking, editorially aligned cover that elevates the magazine’s message and invites even casual passersby into the world of small-space creative gardening.
